Message from Kevin

Welcome to the Coffee Nets newsletter. What a month September is turning out to be. We've been able to work two new informational tools into our busy schedule in order to help you understand computers, their software, and the technology behind them a little bit better. These two tools will provide information to those that like to read and those that like to listen. Every Friday we will be releasing a podcast on our website that we like to call The Data-bean Cast. For those of you not familiar with the term podcast, it is an audio file that you can download from our website and play on your computer or even burn to CD. With these weekly podcasts we will try to get you up to speed on our topic of the month. This month we're discussing networking and wireless networks.

The second informational tool is our monthly newsletter. A year ago we sent out a newsletter and took in lots of feedback. With that feedback, we have been able to rework the newsletter a bit so that we can provide you information a little bit better. Each month when we release the newsletter, we will keep to the theme that The Data-bean Casts are covering.

If you find yourself with more questions than answers we have given you, feel free to send your questions to sales@coffeenets.com and we will try to get your questions answered. Also if you find yourself wishing for a particular topic to be covered, let us know and we will try to cover it in a future months topic.

I hope you find the Coffee Nets newsletter as well as The Data-bean Casts useful. Please forward this newsletter to any friends that you feel could benefit from it.

Wired Networks give you the ability to transfer files and share Internet connections safely and securely!

If you have been thinking of setting up a network to connect your computers together, you can do this easily and securely with a wired network.

What does a wired network require to get everything connected? The components necessary to create a wired network include:

  • Network cards, if they are not already installed in your computer.
  • CAT 5e Ethernet Cables – These look similar to phone cables. You will need one cable for every computer you would like to connect.
  • Router – A router acts like a “railroad switching station”, ensuring that data safely and quickly transfers from one computer to another.

How do I set up a wired network? A wired network can be setup by following a few easy steps.

Step 1: Shut down all of your computers

Step 2: If you do not already have network cards installed, go ahead install them inside each computer you would like to have connected to the network.

Step 3: Get the router ready, but do not plug it in, yet. Go ahead and connect the CAT 5e Ethernet cables to the router and the computers.

Step 4: Turn on the router, then start up your computers. Your computers should be able to connect automatically with the router.

What about wireless networks?

With the constant forward march of technology, wireless networks are becoming more popular.

What do I need to create a wireless network? The components of a wireless network include the following:

  • Wireless Network cards, if they are not already installed in your computer. Most desktop computers do not have wireless network cards already installed, while most laptop computers do.
  • A wireless Router – A wireless router acts like a wired router, but it is able to connect to other computers without wires.

How do I set up a wireless network? A wired network can be setup by following a few easy steps.

Step 1: Select what standard you would like to use. Currently, the “802.11G” standard is the most commonly used, however the common standard in the future may become the “N” standard.

Step 2:  Shut down all of your computers

Step 3: If you do not already have wireless network cards installed, go ahead install them inside each computer you would like to have connected to the network. It often helps to install wireless network cards made by the same manufacturer as the wireless router you plan to use

Step 4: Plug in and turn on your wireless router

Step 5: Turn on the router, then start up your computers. Your computers should be able to see the wireless router within range. You’re your computers see the wireless router within range, an alert will pop up, asking if you would like to connect to the wireless router. This connection is how you will establish your wireless network.

Step 6: Log on to your wireless router by typing in the IP address of the router into your web browser. You can usually find the IP address of the router on a sticker on the bottom of the router.

Step 7: Enter the default username and password included with the instruction manual that came with the wireless router. If you wish you change your username and password, you can do so at this time.

Step 8: Enable WPA encryption on your router.

Step 9: Configure each of your computers with your new WPA encryption key.

How do I share an Internet connection? This is where it can get a bit tricky. In some cases, all you need to do is hook your modem up to your router. In other cases, your router may need to be configured with your Internet username and password. Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide access by Mac address filtering, which can cause an issue in using your router to connect to the Internet. In this instance, the Mac address on your router needs to be changed.

If you have never set up a network before, it can be best to have a Coffee Nets technician set it up for you. If you would like to have your network set up by the professional, courteous technicians at Coffee Nets, call us today at 714-343-1940, and we would be glad to help you set up your network!
